Anyone who’s driven a Panamera Turbo knows how capable it is off the line and through the corners, but nevertheless Porsche has moved the sleek four-door model’s performance up a notch with the new 2021 Panamera Turbo S.
With 620 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque available, plus a standing start to 100 km/h sprint time of 3.1 seconds and top track speed of 315 km/h, no one should have guessed otherwise, but the true test of any performance car is on the track, and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is one seriously daunting 4.0-km road course.
Porsche used the North American operations’ local track to set a best production EV lap time of 1:33.88 minutes in December, and didn’t even wait a month to break that time with an all-round production sedan best of one minute and 31.51 seconds (1:31.51) earlier this month.
“The engineers found a perfect balance,” said professional racing driver Leh Keen, who set the fastest time. “They really made it feel small and sporty. The stability gave me a ton of confidence to use every bit of the asphalt and curbs. And yet the car has a completely different and more refined and relaxed character on the highway – an amazing combination.”
The updated 2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S, which will arrive at Porsche Centre Vancouver this spring, features a beautifully crafted interior filled with the best quality materials and latest technologies, as well as a long list of standard performance equipment including Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+), rear axle steering, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport roll-stabilization system (PDCC Sport), all of which aid the low-slung sport sedan during fast-paced manoeuvres on road or track.
The Panamera Turbo S that now holds the production sedan record at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, was upgraded with a set of newly-developed road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport cup 2 ND0 ultra-high-performance tires measuring 275/35 ZR 21 103Y XL up front and 325/30 ZR 21 108Y XL in back. Their “N” designation signifies co-development between Porsche and a given manufacturer, in this case Michelin, this tire actually tuned specifically for the Panamera at the famed Nürburgring raceway.
Of note, vehicle data acquisition and timing expert Racelogic recorded and verified the Panamera Turbo S lap time using their VBOX video HD2 system.
