Just in case you weren’t aware that Porsche’s 718 coupe and convertible sports cars are amongst the best handling production vehicles currently available, consider that the Guinness World Record for the Fastest Vehicle Slalom was just broken by a young 16-year old woman named Chloe Chambers.
Chambers, who has been racing karts since 11, smashed previous record-holder Jia Qiang’s time by 0.66 seconds last month, the new time an impressive 47.45 seconds compared to 48.11 for the one set in 2018.
“It looks easy, but it’s really not – to weave between 50 cones as fast as possible, trying to beat a record time and knowing I couldn’t touch a single one for the run to count – I definitely felt the pressure,” said Chambers. “Everything came together on my final run; the car worked beautifully and I found the grip I needed. Thank you to my family and to Porsche for supporting and believing in me.”
The experienced kart racer was at the wheel of a six-speed manual transmission-equipped 2020 Porsche 718 Spyder, which along with the 718 Cayman GT4 is the fastest trim in the performance-luxury brand’s entry-level lineup. Both the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 house a naturally aspirated 414 horsepower 4.0-litre flat-six capable of 8,000 rpm just ahead of the rear axle for an optimally balanced mid-engine layout, making them as agile through fast-paced corners as they’re quick off the line.
The top-line 718s also features the automaker’s “track-bred” Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system that includes adaptive dampers, helper springs on the rear axle, and an overall ride height that’s 30 mm (1.18 inches) closer to the ground than a standard 718 Boxster or 718 Cayman.
“We couldn’t be more proud that Chloe set the record,” added Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “From the whole Porsche family, we send our heartfelt congratulations – we’re pleased to have been able to support Chloe with her ambitious record attempt and share her relief that it was successful.”
